Cut

The trick here to mastering manageable curls, is to select a style that will compliment them. You can ask your hairdresser to give you a cut that is low-mantenance and takes weight out of the lengths, while encouraging natural movement and bounce. I would avoid high-maintence cuts that require a lot of blow-drying, as this will cause your strands to dehydrate.

Colour

You should avoid dark, solid shades because they will make your kinks appear heavy. I would add definition by lightening your lengths a little. I wouldn't attempt to try all over bleaching, as your hair is already dry and it will increase dehydration, which means it will be more prone to breakage and frizz.

Style

You can use a wide-toothed comb, and evenly distribute a curl-enhancing product through damp hair, and then twist it to add shape. Another great tip is to invest in a diffuser attachment for your hair dryer, which is an essential tool in creating the perfect curls. So what you can do is gently place small sections of your hair inside the diffuser while you blast, leaving them to dry. I would also finish by running a few drops of serum or oil through your strands to keep them frizz-free and shinny.

Care

It's important to nourish your strands without weighing them down. You can use a curl-specific shampoo and moisture-rich conditioner. I would also recommend a weekly hydration mask and leave-in conditioner to keep your hair hydrated and fight fluffiness.

What are some good products to use?

  • Marc Anthony True Professional Strictly Curls Curl defining Lotion
  • Al'Chemy Lavender and Anthills Leave-in Conditioner
  • John Frieda Frizz Ease Forever Smooth Shampoo
